The Finnish Fashion Law Association is a non-profit organisation dedicated to disseminating knowledge about Fashion Law as both a practical field of law and a distinct practice area. We lead the way in conceptualising fashion law, bridging the gap between legal principles and business operations.

  • Established in November 2014, our organisation boasts a membership of over 150 individuals and companies. Our membership includes eight board members who actively engage with Fashion Law-related cases in their daily professional activities.
  • We are committed to fostering collaboration particularly in the Scandinavian and Baltic regions within the realm of Fashion Law.
  • The association hosts various symposiums, seminars (e.g. Tallinn, Copenhagen, Stockholm and Prague), company visits and similar events. By joining our association, you gain the opportunity to engage with many professionals focused on and intrigued by fashion law. Additionally, you can share your perspectives on the world of fashion law and enhance your understanding by delving into the current legal challenges facing the fashion industry.

We welcome anyone captivated by the intersection of fashion and law to join our association. If you wish to become a member of the Finnish Fashion Law Association, please get in touch with us by email.

Note: You need not be a lawyer to join the Finnish Fashion Law Association! We warmly embrace members from diverse backgrounds, particularly those within the fashion and design industry.

Fashion Law is the concept of problem-oriented examination of legal issues related to the fashion industry. It is not a legal field in the academic sense but rather refers to a practical field of law or a perspective within legal studies. In the approach of Fashion Law, the perspective lies in the nature of business or processes, and the associated legal practical needs or challenges. Legal issues often do not align with just one academic legal field but are networked, overlapping, or intersecting with these traditional legal fields. It also involves practical or phenomenon-based trends.

The legal needs of the fashion industry are related to the activities of companies, educational institutions, designers, suppliers, manufacturers, importers, agents, model agencies, models, photographers, retailers, and advertisers in both traditional and new (including digital) environments. Legal questions arise, for example, regarding intellectual property rights, contracts and terms of collaboration, commercialisation of activities, licensing, consumer trade, regulation of marketing and data protection, as well as legal considerations in e-commerce. Regarding the future operating environment, discussions mainly revolve around issues related to the utilisation of artificial intelligence and regulation of corporate responsibility, such as aspects of producer responsibility and circular economy.
